What is LEGO SERIOUS PLAY?

LEGO SERIOUS PLAY is a facilitated thinking, communication and problem solving method.

It can be used by individuals, groups and organisations to improve the efficiency of meetings, contribute to more effective decision-making and help create innovative solutions.

Workshops, designed by the facilitator, are centred on a series of structured questions designed to unlock knowledge and insights on the desired topic or challenge.

It is a democratic methodology, that allows all participants to share their perspectives and collective intelligence through model building with LEGO bricks and group dialogue.

Why use LEGO SERIOUS PLAY?

  • It increases the efficiency and enjoyment of meetings

  • It helps people understand each other better and improves listening

  • It results in greater commitment by all participants to the workshop outcomes/solutions

  • It generates new insights and unlocks knowledge from the participants, resulting in more innovative solutions

  • It creates inclusive meetings by allowing each person's voice and perspective to be heard through their model

The Core Process

  1. Skills build - short exercises for participants to get used to building and using metaphor to tell stories about the models

  2. Pose the question - the facilitator gives a question e.g. build a model to show the qualities of a good listener

  3. Build a model and give meaning - participants build their models in respond to the question posed. Models could be individual, shared, part of a landscape or system.

  4. Tell and share the story - each person in turn, tells the story of their model, whilst the whole group listens. The rule is that ‘if it's not in the model, you can’t speak about it’, which avoids any one person dominating the process, and keeps the focus on the question and responses.

  5. Learn and reflect - after the models have been shared, there is opportunity for further reflection on what has been heard and the learnings and insights that can be gained by understanding each person’s perspective.
